Taken from “We’ll meet again.”

The man in the black limousine, finally opened the door, and got out slowly. He adjusted his jacket and then with a nod to his driver, and the help of his cane, he started to make his way down to the set where the D*Date boys were wrapping up their photo session. Nooni clapped as they all started to pack up, and then she felt a hand upon her shoulder.

“我々は、再び私の白い鳩を満たしています。”

(translation: “We meet again, my White Dove.”)

And now….

For that moment, it wasn’t 2013 anymore. The second Nonni felt the press of the withered hand upon her shoulder, the sound of his voice; it was 1939 all over again. Nanna Nooni actually trembled, and adjusted herself, turning awkwardly to see a man she had loved so very long ago. Using an ornate and hand carved cane to help him stand independently, the elderly Japanese man smiled as he saw the recognition in her eyes.

“Kikuto?” Nanna Noonie whispered, almost breathlessly.

The young Japanese assistant sprang off the chair she was sitting on, next to Nooni, and bowed repeatedly toward Kikuto, offering her chair so that he may sit down next to Nooni. Kikuto took his hand off Nooni’s shoulder, and ambled around to take his seat, while the assistant was practically gobsmacked to see this reunion of a couple who had long since been apart. She understood when she said. “We meet again, my White Dove”, since it was just as Nanna Nooni had told her in the story of her life as a young exotic dancer. Course it was rude to overshadow the couple and she bowed once more and went to help with the photography crew who were about to get ready to pack up.

Kikuto sat his cane alongside his right leg, and then watched the D*Date band boys, doing the last of their beach games for the photo shoot, as Nooni stared at him in wonder. How many years had it been now? From the moment that she had been rescued aboard the fishing vessel that belonged to her father, till the day she arrived in Japan with her great granddaughter Inga, Nooni had wondered if Kikuto had survived the war, and if so; what had become of him.

Kikuto was dressed immaculately, in a fine black suit, polished shoes, and of course, the gold ring on his finger with the initial “N”. From appearances, life had been kind to him in his later years. Nooni had so many questions she wanted to ask, so many things she wanted to say. She found her voice, after swallowing hard, when he placed his hand over hers, but kept his gaze at the boy band before them.

“And we meet again…by the water. The very last place I saw you.” Nanna Nooni’s eyes were brimming with tears, as she had just recanted her tale of her escape from Singapore. “You saved my life, Kikuto.” With her chin trembling, as she placed her hand over his, and patted it, before squeezing tight as she dared. Almost like she feared if she let go, then this dream of a meeting would be just that. But he was very real. Taking his eyes from the boy band, and then turning his head, so he could gaze into her tear filled eyes, he uttered words, that would melt even the hardest of hearts.

“I could never let my White dove be caged….so…I set you free.”

It was the truth. In the mad dash by Noni to reach the boat, and leap off the wharf, he had her in his gun sights. He could have easily shot her in the back, and yet he just let his finger rest on the trigger and stopped firing. Of the twenty women, that had escaped the back of the truck, nineteen lay upon the wharf, till another truck came along, and a high ranking officer stepped out and saw the carnage. Kikuto explained, that the truck he was in had engine problems, and that on stopping, the women had made a break for freedom. The fishing boat had long since left the harbour, with Noni safely aboard. Other soldiers got out from the back of the second truck, and checked all the bodies of the dead women, before simply rolling them off the pier and into the sea. There would be no funerals, no family to pay respects. They were simply the causalities of a world at war.

But back to the present, and Kikuto chuckled softly, feeling the press of his dear Noni’s hand on his. He looked at the boy band and then her and asked.

“Aren’t they a bit young for you?”

Noni found herself laughing so much she started having a coughing fit. The diminutive Noni shook her head as she caught her breath, placing her hand upon her chest. The boys of D*Date saw that Noni now had company, and were shocked at just who was sitting beside her, but one of the country’s leading music moguls. The boys started to whisper to each other and giggle, while Noni fought to get out what she wanted to say in reply to his funny question.

“They all asked me out. I still have it you know, even without all the feathers…and..*she glanced down at what was left of her breasts, which were held up barely*….tits” Even at her ripe old age, Nanna had a way with putting things, as Sven and Inga well knew.

In Kikuto’s eyes, it was never the feathers, or the dancing that attracted him to Noni all those years before. He had genuinely fallen in love with her spirit, her zest for life, and wit, none of which had diminished over the many years apart. Kikuto brought up her hand to his lips, and pressed it to the back softly. They had so many lost years to make up for. Their lives from the moment they were parted on that pier that fateful night till now, was over half a life time. Filled with family, love, loss, death, marriage, children and grand children.

“The boys can wait. I wish to feel the beautiful feathers of my White dove once more.” Kikuto said, rising up from his chair, and taking his cane up, helping right himself, as he offered a hand to Noni. His chauffeur came over and took up Noni’s bags, as the boys in the band, and all the camera crew and assistants, cheered and waved, as the newly found couple, set off on a wondrous night in down town Tokyo.

Noni waved back at the sweet boys; her toy boys if you will. But she was ready to reminisce and enjoy the rest of her Japanese odyssey with the man she owed her life too.

Love was about to get a second chance.

Tonight it’s very clear
‘Cause we’re both lying here
There’s so many things I wanna say
I will always love you
I would never leave you alone

Sometimes I just forget
Say things I might regret
It breaks my heart to see you crying
I don’t wanna lose you
I could never make it alone

I am a man who will fight for your honor
I’ll be the hero you’re dreaming of
We’ll live forever
Knowing together
That we did it all for the glory of love

You keep me standing tall
You help me through it all
I’m always strong when you’re beside me
I have always needed you
I could never make it alone

I am the man who will fight for your honor
I’ll be the hero
You’ve been dreaming of
We’ll live forever
Knowing together that we did it all
For the glory of love

It’s like a knight in shining armor
From a long time ago
Just in time I will save the day
Take you to my castle far away

I am the man who will fight for your honor
I’ll be the hero that your dreaming of
We’re gonna live for ever
Knowing together
That we did it all for the glory of love

We’ll live forever
Knowing together
That we did it all for the glory of love
We did it all for love
